MS Facts and Info

July 2, 2010

Those living with multiple sclerosis are presented with numerous challenges each day—challenges that most people take for granted. Multiple areas of an MS patient’s life can be affected by their condition, including their personal relationships and social life, work, parenting, and dozens of other aspects. Over 400,000 people in the United States have MS, yet the majority of Americans do not have much knowledge about the condition.

Awareness Gift Boutique wants to help spread the word and raise awareness of multiple sclerosis, so here are a few fast facts about MS courtesy of the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation:

  • About 45 percent of the people with MS are not severely affected by the disease.
  • Diagnosis of MS is usually between 20 and 40 years of age.
  • MS affects more women than men, with a ratio of 2:1.
  • About 85 percent of those who are newly diagnosed have the relapsing-remitting form of MS.
  • Without disease-modifying therapy, about 50 percent of those diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS will become progressive at 10 years.
  • Without disease-modifying therapy, about one-third of those diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS will be using a wheelchair at 20 years.
  • MS does not significantly affect life span.
  • The course of the disease is unpredictable and no two people will experience the same set of symptoms.

If you or one of your loved ones is living with MS, help spread the word with our distinctive line of apparel featuring orange MS awareness ribbons and encouraging slogans. MS Awareness: Help Us Spread the Word!

June 4, 2010

In the United States alone, approximately 400,000 people are living with a condition called multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis, or MS for short, is an often-disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. The central nervous system is comprised of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. MS is often chronic, or recurrent, and extremely unpredictable. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, different people are likely to experience very different symptoms when it comes to MS, which means that the course of the disease may look very different from one person to another. Unfortunately, this can initially cause difficulties diagnosing the condition.

There are several different medications that have been shown to slow down the progression of MS, meaning that most people with MS do not become severely disabled. Most have a normal or near-normal life expectancy.

The official cause of MS is not yet known, but scientists believe a combination of various factors may be involved, including gender, genetics, age, geography, and ethnic background. Some common initial indicators of MS include fatigue, numbness, and walking or balance problems.

Here at Awareness Gift Boutique, our slogan is “Creating Awareness for Those Matters that Matter,” and MS awareness is important to us. Our exclusive line of MS awareness apparel and merchandise featuring the orange MS awareness ribbon is available in our online boutique, and you may be interested in some of the following T-shirts:
